A Dark And Stormy Night. Teresa Chafey is running away from home. Driving north along the California coast, she picks up two mysterious hitchhikers: Poppy Corn and Freedom Jack. Together the three of them tell stories: Teresa of her devastating relationship with her boyfriend, Poppy of a sad young woman she once knew, and Freedom of a talented young man with a violent temper. Yet as they talk, a darker story unfolds around them. A story of life and death, of redemption and damnation. It will be the longest night of Teresa's life. Maybe the last night of her life.
One of my favorites! I've read all of Christopher Pike's YA horror books (when I was a teen and, again, when I was in my 30's), and I'm rating my favorites now with a similar review just to let you know what books are his absolute best, in my opinion. This is in my top 5!
By Far His Best Work

I began reading young adult mysteries (Pike, R.L. Stine, Cooney, ect...)and thrillers as a teenager. I am now a highly educated (PhD) 26 year old and I recently began rereading and studying these books. Most of them I don't really care for anymore for a variety of reasons (too predictable, unimaginative, ect...). However, this book represents(along with a few other Pike and Cooney novels) an exception. I appreciate this book more now than I did when I was a kid. I own and have read every Christopher Pike novel ever written. This was by far my favorite! The stories that his characters tell are amazingly detailed and creative. It was almost as if they were based on true events. The book drove me to tears at the end, not necessarily because it was sad, but because at the end I got this eary feeling that you can only get when an ending comes together so well. I highly reccommend this book to anyone adults included!
I wonder if readers understand the meaning of the title.

Most books have the title mentioned in some way or other during the story. This one doesn't which is part of the fun--trying to solve that mystery. In the story, Teresa and her boyfriend have just quit dating because he breaks up with her. Teresa hops in her car and drives with no apparent destination in mind--she just has to get away. (Too obvious to be what the title is really referring to.) On her trip, Teresa picks up two hitchhikers who tell her about horrible things that happened to two friends they had. Will their story help Teresa learn some important lessons in life, or is it too late? The mystery remains--what is the title referring to??? Sorry, I have to be a tease--can't tell you! Just sit back and enjoy. Also Recommended: (Any Pike Book) Similar Themes: Remember Me 1,2,3; The Immortal; Bury Me Deep; The Midnight Club
