The year is 2015 and the Earth is six degrees warmer than it was 100 years ago. Great continental deserts have forced most of Earth's dwindling population to live on the shores of the dying ocean. The great cities have become ghost towns while the rich live in temperature controlled domes, fresh water supplied by massive desalination plants. They have private armies protecting them and captive engineers keeping the complex systems of life running. It is a gilded cage but a cage nonetheless. The dome cannot afford to lose its engineers but sometimes they run.
