RAINY DAY is the first book of the Saddle Wise series. The story's main character is April Helmbach. When she was four, her parents died in an accident involving a pony. After that, April has been afraid of horses. Now April is thirteen years old and has been living with her Aunt Patti in Plattsburg, Missouri. The beginning of this book takes place on Interstate 54. Aunt Patti and April are on their way to St. Louis when they come to a traffic jam. Both get out to investigate. Many people and horses were badly hurt. Aunt Patti changed her mind and told April to head back to the car and wait for her while she tried to help as much as she can. When her aunt left, April didn't head back to the car, instead she went to the center of the accident. A few moments later April felt a nudged her on shoulder and she turned only to see a horse. She was frozen with fear until a guy walked up to her and told April they needed to get the surviving horses off the road quickly. April was very nervous, but she was able to help one horse back to the trailer. She felt a bond develop between them. The next day, they went to see the horse April helped. That's when she met Marty. He knew April's parents. Marty and the horse she rescued, Rainy Day, were just the start of April's horse adventures that lead to her overcoming her fear.
