Pat's funny, kookie book charmed me back in the '70s. I found him and sailed with him before starting to bareboat charter in the Caribbean. What you need to know is to be found in this book, and each page and the drawings and diagrams make study and learning a joy.

I have Royce's Sailing Illustrated - a hand-me-down from and 86 year old "salt", dog-eared and water-stained. It is the most complete compilation of information, beautifully organized (remembering it was probably tapped out on a typewriter before computers), handsomely drawn and clearly written. It's amazing that Royce has packed so much in this tiny volume. I have never gone to this "bible" with a question and not been satisfied. And no sailor that I know has been able to argue with Royce's wisdom. You'll need two: one by land and one by sea.
This is a book every sailor should have, an excellent gift.
