Always in search of adventure, Sam sneaks onto a school bus. Discovered by a couple of schoolkids, they smuggle the puppy into their classroom, where they hope to keep her hidden. Never one to miss out on all the fun, however, Sam is soon causing mayhem, chewing books and walking over students' wet paintings. This Level 1 first reader contains short stories, simple sentences, easy vocabulary, simple visual clues and lots of repetition.
I have a four year old son named Sam, so I'm always delighted to find books whose main character has that name. I recently happened upon the cute series of "Kids Can Read" books by Mary Labatt that are about a dog named Sam. I ordered six of them (one of which was "Sam Goes to School"), only to find that the dog is referred to as a female throughout every book. The book quality is very good, and I like the illustrations, but I find myself needing to improvise and say "he" and "his" every time the book says "she" or "her." Had I known the books were about a female dog, I wouldn't have ordered them because it's confusing to my son. (Unfortunately, I read only the first editorial review by Booklist, which refers to the dog as a male.) If you have a daughter named Samantha and you call her "Sam," I highly recommend that you get these books for her. They're very cute! If you have a son named Sam, I suggest that you check out these great titles: Kiss Good Night, Don't You Feel Well Sam?, You Can Do It Sam!, Sammy the Seal, Sammy and the Dinosaurs, and The Loudness of Sam.

The book was exactly what I wanted with the exception that I would have preferred a hardcover book. Other than that, it's perfect!

My 2 1/2 loves all of the Sam stories and we read them over and over! He is able to predict the words that are coming which is a good start to reading. I only wish there were more stories to buy!

A cute little book

This was a fun book to read with my first grader. He enjoyed it, as did I. I noticed, that it represented many different ethnic groups(asian, hispanic, african american, caucasian, etc....) The book was fun, as it would be something that could "almost" happen to a little dog. Sam, the little dog, ends up at school, without her owners knowing it. It goes on to tell of the mischief and adventure she gets into, as well as how she is returned to her owners. A great little first reader book.
