why is this called a romance?

I thought this was just a junky romance, albiet old, that was laying around the house that somebody had given me. I was reading it out of desperation, nothing to read. But it was great, dark, and never what I expected. Theres's hardly any romance, it's a novel but not a romance. Anyway it was good, going to try and find her other stuff and read it now.
