Scotland, through the ages by Michael Jenner is a wonderful combination of pictures and history to tell the tale of Scotland. So many books focus on the last part of the 13th century with the wars of independence to the Jacobite rebellions of the 18th century and forget all the history before and after that. Michael Jenner does not. He explains that the Scots are not all Kilt wearing warriors that lived in clans in the highlands. They were Celts, Picts, Britons and Angles that were all competing for control. Then you add the Vikings and eventually the Normans and You end up with the modern Scot. As he weaves all these into the fabric of Scottish history he has included beautiful pictures that show Scotland in all its glory. The pictures of the landscapes and ruins of castles remind the readers of what a amazing and ancient land that Scotland is.

This book well suits its primary role as a visual guide to Scotland; it is full of pictures of the landscape and especially the artitecture of Scotland spanning the full course of its history from the days of the Caledonians to the early 20th Century. The rather minute amount of text is mostly description of the buildings shown in the pictures, but also gives a summary of Scottish history.
