This newly edited version of Elgar's 'Sea Pictures' is in the higher keys that Elgar originally wrote for soprano. It matches up this conductor score with a new set of orchestra parts and a piano vocal score (available separately). Previous versions of this work by other publishers are traditionally littered with mistakes and wrong notes / instructions, which have been fixed in this edition, including the addition of rehearsal marks which align the conductor score with the piano vocal score and orchestra parts. Elgar's 1899 work is a song cycle consisting of five songs: Sea Slumber Song, In Haven (Capri), Sabbath Morning at Sea, Where Corals Lie and The Swimmer. Elgar lowered the keys to suit contralto Dame Clara Butt, who gave the premiere and Sea Pictures has become one of the most popular works for contraltos and mezzo-sopranos and is frequently a major study work at conservatoires and universities. However, his original writing was for soprano, which is reflected in this new edition, with the piano part adjusted to more closely resemble the orchestral parts. We also publish the traditionally performed version suitable for mezzo-soprano / contralto elsewhere on Amazon.
