sendmail

This Nutshell Handbook is far and away the most comprehensive book ever written on sendmail, the program that acts like a traffic cop in routing and delivering mail on UNIX-based networks. Although sendmail is used on almost every UNIX system, it's one of the last great uncharted territories--and most difficult utilities to learn-- in UNIX system administration. This book provides a complete sendmail tutorial, plus extensive reference material on every aspect of the program. What's more, it's authoritative, having been co-authored by Eric Allman, the developer of sendmail, and Neil Rickert, one of the leading sendmail gurus on the Net.This book covers both IDA sendmail and the latest version (V8) from the University of California, Berkeley. It also covers the standard versions available on most systems, such as those found on Sun and DEC/Ultrix workstations. The book is divided into four parts. Part One is a tutorial on understanding sendmail from the ground up; starting from an empty file, it has the reader work through exercises, building a configuration file and testing the results. Part Two covers practical issues in sendmail administration. Part Three is a comprehensive reference section, while Part Four consists of appendices and a bibliography.

If you take care of Sendmail servers, you should have this book. I've been using this application for almost 10 years, and I still learn new things all the time, and this book is primarily where I get my answers. Highly recommended.

the sendmail bible

If you are a mail admin and don't use this book, you are either doing it wrong or are a genius.Anyone who is serious about sendmail administration and configuration must use this book.sendmail is far to complex to be used w/o a great reference such as this.

A must have for all Sendmail Admin

Without a doubt, this is the best reference book there is on Sendmail. No other books come close.

You Need This!

Excellent update from the 2nd edition. Anyone who administers a Sendmail server needs this "reference" includes SMTP Auth, libMilter etc.I would suggest to the negative reviewers here to stick with a zero configuration solution such as iMail, this isn't a hold your hand setup text, it's reference. Sendmail requires some dedication, the learning curve is steep, but the rewards are great.

Buy the 3rd edition!

BUY THIS BOOK! If you have an earlier edition, throw it away and buy this book! If you looked at earlier editions and decided that they were not for you, forget the past ! Buy this book! The third edition is more than a new edition; it is a complete re-write that vastly improves the sendmail book. The second edition had 38 chapters spread over a 1,000 pages. All of the details were there, but they were so hard to find, the index was the most used section of the book. Not anymore! Despite adding 200 more pages of material, the book has been reduced to 25 logical, organized chapters. Each chapter describes an important function and covers that function in a step-by-step manner. The book is well organized, beautifully written, and a joy to read.
