Server+ & Linux+ Certification Exams ExamFOCUS Study Notes & Review Questions 2012: Covers both the Server+ exam and the Linux+ LX0-101 exam.

CONTENTS UPDATED FALL 2012. The Server+ exam is computer based - no need for paper and pencil at all. It has multiple choice questions only. It aims to measure foundation level server skills and knowledge.Topics that have to be dealt with in the exam include:System HardwareSoftwareStorageIT EnvironmentDisaster RecoveryTroubleshootingAlthough you don't have to be A+ certified in order to go for Server+, knowledge covered by the A+ certification is essential. After all, we are dealing with PC-like X86 based servers here. For Linux+, there are TWO 60-questions-exams. LX0-101 covers topics such as system architecture; Linux Installation and package management; GNU and Unix commands; devices, Linux filesystems, and filesystem hierarchy standard; while LX0-102 covers topics on shells, scripting and data management; user interfaces and desktops; administrative tasks; essential system services; networking fundamentals; and security. The target candidate job roles are more or less at the junior level. This book primarily covers LX0-101. We give you knowledge information relevant to the exam specifications. To be able to succeed in the real exams, you'll need to apply your earned knowledge to the question scenarios. Many of the exam questions are written to be less straight forward. They tend to be framed within the context of short scenarios. The exams are not too difficult. However, coverage is very comprehensive - a wide range of topics are presented in the official topic list. The exam does not ask you to answer hundreds of questions. In other words, only a small fraction of the official topics will be presented. To succeed in the exam, you need to read as many reference books as possible. There is no single book that can cover everything! This ExamFOCUS book focuses on the more difficult topics that will likely make a difference in exam results. The book is NOT intended to guide you through every single official topic. You should therefore use this book together with other reference books for the best possible preparation outcome. You need to have hands on experience configuring x86 based Server and Linux. This book is not intended to serve as an A-B-C to Linux book. You should have your own server system and test network to play with. While it is possible for one to be paper-certified without any real skills and experience, we believe that having real skills is the only way for you to become truly competent. The typical way to obtain and install Linux is to have a Windows PC with a CD writer and CD burning software handy. Go download an ISO image of a Linux distribution (see http://www.gnu.org/distros/free-distros.html), then burn this image into a CD, and use this CD to boot a x86 based test server. If the CD drive is not bootable, and if you are lucky enough to have a floppy drive, use dd from another Linux system or rawrite under Windows to create a boot floppy. The boot image is distribution specific.
