Book Overview

Extending beyond the technical architecture to the very philosophy of how a business should operate, the Service Orientation approach establishes fluidity across boundaries to provide agility, transparency, and fundamental competitive advantage.

Service Oriented Enterprises brings the concept of service orientation from the IT department to the boardroom, applying the precepts of service oriented technology to the underlying dynamics of how a business operates. Implementing a technological concept as a cultural paradigm, the SOE succeeds by combining the best features from virtual, extended, real-time, and resilient enterprises to serve not just its customers, but also its trading partners, shareholders and employees. Building primarily on the success of the Internet and the automation of business policies and processes, the Service Oriented Enterprise (SOE) is defined by three essential layers: the enterprise performance layer, the business process management layer, and the underlying service oriented architecture. This book focuses primarily on layers two and three and how the fundamental dynamics of a business can be altered when these concepts are applied to both architecture and culture.

Beginning with an overview of the emerging SOE culture, the text contrasts the new service-oriented methodologies with traditional waterfall and iterative methodologies. Emphasizing Web Service strategies for description, discovery, and deployment techniques, the author goes deeper into service-oriented concepts describing the business process management suite as the central core of the SOE, and introducing the Enterprise Service Bus as the backbone for integration. The text describe how modeling, executing, and continuously improving the business process and business policies lends to the development of a common language between business and IT. The book concludes by expanding on these concepts and delving into the societal and behavioral aspects of the Service

A Masterpiece on BPM SOA

This is one of the best books on BPM and SOA. It is also a masterpiece on business management. It is a book for technicians and for executives. Shows the technological and business sides with depth and clarity. BPM and SOA are complex and need to be accompanied by a solid administrative approach. In this way, the book has a realistic view of this tecnology. The autor shows the benefits but alerts for the challenges. BPM and SOA, alone, do not transform an organization. The boos is also ease to read with many illustrations. It shows concepts, methodologies, modeling, discovery and architecture of services, BPM, security and business performance. So, it's complete about BPM and SOA.

SOA in Action

In this book, Dr. Khoshafian demonstrates his deep industry knowledge and expertise by not only illuminating the importance of SOA to today's business architecture but also by applying this expertise into actionable advice for the reader. Khoshafian helps the reader to understand the practical applications of various technologies while he explores the SOE. I would recommend this book to both business and IT for greater understanding of the issues impacting today's businesses.

Understanding how to fuel your Service Oriented Architecture

If your organization is facing the challenge of figuring out how to overcome Operating obstacles by leveraging the latest and greatest technology, then this book is for you. It truly helped me understand the strength of what SOA brings to the table, and how to wrap methodologies around it to really differentiate your business with speed and agility.

Understanding SOA from All Angles

Have you identified the human element of SOA within your organization? Service Oriented Enterprises provides an in-depth look at how SOAs are affecting various facets within the enterprise - both organizational AND cultural. Dr. Khoshafian has done a tremendous job making the argument that SOA is only part of the puzzle toward change and that the second major layer of SOEs, called service oriented business process integration, is key to success. I especially liked the ideas he presented on how service orientation can narrow the gap between business and IT, as I can implement some of those ideas at my company. This book will be helpful to both the IT-focused people within your organization as well as the business people who are actively trying to lead in today's service-computing world.

A Solid Read for SOA and BPM

Dr. Khoshafian shows just how important it is for organizations to have an effective gameplan with SOA and BPM, not to mention the many benefits one can reap from these valuable technologies. And he tells this in a way that is practical, understandable and yet still realistic. Service Oriented Enterprises is a must-read, whether you're from the IT or business side of the aisle.
