This is a great way to learn sewing from the bottom up. It is well written with much in the way of helpful advice and tips for the beginning sewer. I have managed to make several items and I just started sewing with a machine given to me, oh yes, I am 62 years old and a man.

I am a total sewing newbie. Before this book I could barely sew a straight line. I learned something by the 3rd page and within 2 days of reading the book I sewed a pvc capelet that looks totally professional. This book is something I would recommend to every person new to sewing and even if you are experienced you may learn a few things.

This book is perfect for anyone who's utterly clueless about sewing. It's clear, direct, and simple to follow. It worked for me because I was able to pace myself and start small, for instance, a shirt for my dogs. Now, I feel confident enough to tackle some homedecorating projects.
Excellent for the beginning seamstress

If you can't take a class, educate yourself in the basics with this excellent beginner's guide. I've read lots of sewing guides, but this is the most user-friendly. From selecting patterns and how to read them, picking fabric, sewing machines and basic construction skills, this book has it all. Highly recommend!
Great book for newbies!

I used this book to help me when I decided to sew my daughter's first Halloween costume. My husband and I decided that we wanted her to be an armadillo, but there are no patterns, so I had to get a pattern that was close, and change it to my specifications. I could not have done it without this book. The book taught me all about bias, nap, threading a sewing a machine, and has tips to make the process easier. I wish I could post a picture here to show you how cute the costume ended up. My mother-in-law, a lifelong sewer, couldn't believe that my first project turned out so beautifully. It was all thanks to this book!
