Manolo's struggle to figure out who he is, other than the son of a famous bullfighter, makes for a haunting story. Part of the pleasure is discovering that one's destiny may be, in fact, to choose a path that leads in an entirely unexpected direction. The somber, ghostly illustrations add to the sense of mystery.
