A powerful tale of magic, love, and revenge set in fairy-tale Japan. Trained in the magical art of shadow-weaving, sixteen-year-old Suzume is able to re-create herself in any form - a fabulous gift for a girl desperate to escape her past. But who is she really? Is she a girl of noble birth living under the tyranny of her mother's new husband, Lord Terayama? Or a lowly drudge scraping a living in the ashes of Terayama's kitchens? Or is she Yue, the most beautiful courtesan in the Moonlit Lands? Whatever her true identity, Suzume is destined to use her skills to steal the heart of a prince in a revenge plot to destroy Terayama. And nothing will stop her, not even the one true aspect of her life- her love for a fellow shadow-weaver.
When I first read this book I was in freshman year of high-school and ended up looking at the cover and getting intrigued. However I found myself beginning and never finishing the book. With many reasons why. I didn't have enough time during this period of my life as well as getting so unbelievably frustrated with some of the characters. I went through a long tough search to find this book whixh I had forgotten the name and even most details of the cover. I vaguely remembered the story and ended up finding it after a month of searching. I re-read the book and quickly found why I had stopped reading it. However I was determined to keep reading after my long tedious search. And I could not be happier that i did. The book had twist and turns that left me with heartache and joy. The type of book where you wanna scream and throw across the room. But also want you to keep reading and hope so desperately that the main character will listen to you. I have not experienced a sensation of love, hate, and frustration in a book in such a long time. I am entirely pleased with how this book made me feel and think. And found myself unwilling ro put it down. At times I wanted to get done quicker so I could find out how it all ended up. But also wanted to savor the feelings it gave me and make the whole book last. I have read many books and this one is high up on my top 10.
