How the tragedy of colonialism affects the colonial policeman

This novel is a good follow-up to the non-fiction study: "Empire Made Me: An Englishman adrift in Shanghai" by Robert Bickers. The Shanghai Municipal Police were picked for their looks: Tall and imposing, often from Scotland, or impressive-looking Sikhs. The flavor of Old Shanghai before the start of the Second World War is dramatically conveyed in this well-written story, and a timely read, since 2010 is the year of the Shanghai Exposition.
