As caring adults we give and receive informal mentoring every day. Sharing Wisdom offers us the opportunity to make the most of these natural encounters. This book offers forty brief lessons to make the process of offering and receiving mentoring clearer. The information is designed to be practical and readily usable and it is intended to help you nurture your natural talents as well as to better appreciate the guidance offered by others. The book ends with answers to common questions on mentoring, a summary list of the mentoring guidelines and a brief annotated bibliography.
A wonderful group of 40 short chapters (1-3 pages each) to assist all of us in the journey of life, and in journeying with others through life. I found this book to be an excellent way to start the day, or pause to refresh and perhaps gain perspective. It is a book I'll be reading over again, both individual chapters and from cover to cover.Robert J. Wicks has a talent for seeing the simple in the most complex of situations. His "Kitchen Table Wisdom" is appropriate for all our relationships, be it the corporate executive mentoring a rising star, or a parent guiding an offspring through the maze of adolescence. His counsel will enrich the friendships we all treasure, from spouses and significant others to the car pool or water cooler discussions. Robert J. Wicks brings many years of professional "mentoring" experience to his writing, and yet is able to distill his knowledge and wisdom so it is useful for the common person. One of my favorite thoughts he offered in this book was to have "low expectations, and high hopes" for others. Then we will always be surprised! This book would be understandable and a good read for all age groups, from the high school student involved in a peer counseling program, to the mother of toddlers joining in the challenges that come with that occupation, to the professional mentor - psychologist, spiritual director, pastor, to all of us a friends. This book has something for everyone, as we are all "Companions on the Journey of life." I recommend this book... Everyone can find 3-5 minutes during the day to read a chapter, then the rest of the day will be filled with opportunities to use the wisdom gained.
