Book Overview

Troutman Street runs along the border of Brooklyn and Queens, in between neighborhoods, unwanted and unclaimed. For most people who do business there -- whether prostitues, drug dealers, or more legitimate entrepreneurs -- Troutman Street is the end of the line. But for Thomas Rosselli and his partner Stoney, it's just the location of another scam, the latest incarnation in a long series of endeavors that work the fringes of capitalism, the broad gray areas where the rash and unwary are prey to sharp teeth and sticky fingers. The junkyard on Troutman Street is the perfect place to fly under the radar of the tax man, the cops, and even the drug dealers and wiseguys who'd want a piece of the action -- if they could figure out what it is.Stoney thinks his biggest problem is the hangover he wakes up with every morning. He loves his wife and kids, but they're terrified of him. Even his cat hates him. Every time he gets behind the wheel of his car, he's rolling the dice; one more DWI and he'll do time for sure, and he can't afford that right now. His partner Tommy'd run the business right into the ground inside of six months -- or make them a fortune; no way to tell which.Thomas Roselli, a.k.a. "Fat Tommy," a.k.a. "Tommy Bagadonuts," is a large man, of large appetites. He knows the best restaurants in New York and how much to tip the ma tre d' in each one. He knows who to call if he really, really wants you sleeping with the fishes in the bottom of the East River. If you met Tommy, you'd remember him, but he'd remember you, your phone number, your wife's name, and what his chances with her are. And Tommy has a soft spot for any stray that comes along.Tuco is just such a stray. Now, thanks to Bagadonuts, he works in the junkyard on Troutman Street, and his life is about to go spinning into a new and more dangerous orbit. Unsure of himself, unskilled with women, and equally awkward with men, Tuco knows he'll learn more from these two in a year than he would in five years anywhere else, even if half of it he'd be better of not knowing. Tuco has a gift, one that will come in handy for Stoney and Tommy, maybe even save their lives, when people start dying on Troutman Street. But as he learns to use it -- and he struggles to walk the line between family, friends, and the law -- he almost forgets the first rule: Watch your back.Written with the pulse of the city beating beneath its prose, Shooting Dr. Jack is compelling, powerful, and pitch-perfect, and Norman Green is an exciting new voice in contemporary fiction.

A Compelling and Coarse Tale That You Will Not Be Able To Put Down!

Shooting Dr. Jack was a great crime story that I could not put down that made me run out to the bookstore to buy Norman Green's next three novels The Angel of Montague Street, Way Past Legal and Dead Cat Bounce the very night I finished it! Right from the get go Mr. Green makes you feel the pain and discomfort welling up in his characters anxiety ridden lives that are starting to spin wildly out of control. The novel's setting and characters are thoroughly believable, not like the usual unrealistic and trite type seen in all too many crime stories. The stories `less than upright citizens' end up in trouble with some `even less than upright citizens' (who are themselves in trouble with some `much less than upright citizens') and can only get out of danger by setting up an elaborate sting. All of this frenzied complication and suspense is brilliantly set to the backdrop of alcoholism, drug addiction and prostitution.

A good first novel

I ended up reading Green's three books in the reverse chronological order in which they were written ... this is his first book and the last one that I read. I'm a big fan of Green's ... and like this book almost as well as his last. Like the other two, this has a good plot and interesting characters. While you don't feel much sympathy for the characters at the beginning, they grow on you and by the end you're wholly engaged. Not a mystery ... but a good suspense novel and a great character study. I'm only sorry that his fourth book hasn't been released!

Outstanding First Book

Shooting Dr. Jack is an excellent first novel for Norman Green. The book's characters come to life with Green's detailed descriptions. His ability to describe characters, places and events is a rarity in todays books, and you feel as if his characters are actual people walking the streets of Brooklyn. Once I started this novel and got to know these characters I could not put it down. I can't wait for Norman Green's second book, I am sure it will be full of more detailed and memorable characters, and surprises.

A winner!

Norm Green's characters are so real and alive, I could swear that I've seen them somewhere in the NY metro area. Shooting Dr. Jack is a mystery...but much more than your typical mystery. It brings you in and puts you right on the streets of Brooklyn. Even though I lost sleep from reading late into the night, I really didn't want the book to end.My advise to others: try it, you'll like it.I can't wait for his next novel. Hurry up Norman Green, give us more.

What a great first novel

This is really an unbelievably good first novel. The best part about the book is the characters--they're like something out of The Sopranos. They're not exactly good guys, but boy, do you root for them. The language here sounds completely authentic and the story keeps you turning the pages. This is really a terrific read.
