This book is a gem--as another reviewer said, why has there been no literature before like this? I once told a friend of mine who only had a brother that an older sister is like a mother--only younger. But it is more complicated than that, and it took many, many writers to convey the complexity of the relationship. I am pasting in the People review--not a literary powerhouse,I know, but they got this one spot-on. I just loved this book and gave a copy to my sister. It captures all of the joys and angst of being a sister. I recommend it to everyone who has a sister, either by family or in spirit.

Why is there so little written about sisters? The social science literature has so many excellent studies of parental relationships, marriage, romantic relationships, and so very little about this intensely interesting bond. These stories, essays and poems offer poignant and evocative dimensions of the complex, fraught, loving, competitive, and powerful relationships sisters experience. I hope this becomes volume 1 of a series, and I plan to make this my holiday gift for everyone I know who has a sister, wishes she had a sister, or has become a symbolic 'sister'.
