Shortly after the World War II, Dr. Rosie Trethway moves to a remote corner of New Zealand hoping to leave her hectic life behind, but her plans go awry. This larger-than-life tale combines the suspenseful adventure of A Perfect Storm and the irresistible romance of The African Queen.
In this book the reader is introduced to three characters, Bernie, the dying alcoholic, Red the War Veteran and Angus the Scottish writer. Upon Bernie's death his shack on Great Barrier Island is inherited by former Doctor Rosie Trethewey. Red and Angus are both deeply troubled by this sudden and unexpected invasion into their reclusive world.Rosie is determined to make a new life for herself on the island in spite of what Red or Angus do to discourage her. This book is a wondrous read about 3 loners who find out that they do need each other after all.Derek Hansen is a masterful storyteller and weaves his tale with a deft hand.

Fantastic story where ALL characters were fleshed out and made real. Rosie was gorgeous, I loved her determination and spirit to make a go of it on in unhospitable territory. Island paced, rather than slow paced, it gives me the need to save some money for a island holiday!
outstanding read

I loved this book. I read all the time and this is the best book I have read in quite awhile. I loved the chararcters and how they evolved. Yeah, for Rosie who manages the rigors of living on a remote island quite nicely. I loved all the characters, be they lovable or miserable. Even the Archie and Bonnie were interesting!
A really memorable story

I picked up this book by accident, and am really pleased to have found it. Although I've read several other books since I read SOLE SURVIVOR, I find myself still thinking about it, and in particular, about the character Red. And the blatant poaching of foreign fishing fleets is of concern even now. This is definitely worth reading - not that much action, but a terrific character study. You can't help feeling optimistic at the end!
A Ripping Good Yarn

Another great read from the Hansen stable. Quite a different novel from his previous "Lunch with ...." series, which were wonderful. Something for everyone in this story, very down to earth, believable and likeable characters, set in the Hauraki Gulf. If you haven't visited Great Barrier, this book would definitely make you want to see it. A book I found hard to put down. Can't wait for the next Hansen gem.
