In May 2006, within the frame of the project "Shoah Memories," Simone Veil decides to tell her life story in front of a camera: the sun in Nice, the careless existence in a close-knit, republican, secular family, the war, the occupation... and on April 13th, 1944, the 71 convoy that took her, her mother, and her sister to Auschwitz-Birkenau.

With ample vivacity, much detail, and a great dose of irony, Veil recounts her eighteen months at the extermination camp: the cold, the hunger, the indignities, the friendships, the relationships between men and women, the "march of death" to Bergen-Belsen, and their return, with a renovated dose of humiliation. This iconic flag-bearer for women's rights and for the commitment to memory warns us that only by hoping the Shoah isn't forgotten nor trivialized, the pain of those who endured it might be eased.
