Setting her story in Scotland, 1644 Linda Madl's latest romance has an abundance of Scottish history coupled with an intriguing cast of characters making this an extremely entertaining romance. Honora Mailtland has been putting off suitors for some time now for one reason or another and would like nothing better than to make a love match even as her two uncles are pushing her towards accepting an older, widower with six children. After a heated exchange with said uncles, she left the room exclaiming that she'd `....rather marry the devil himself'. Running from the room she ran into the very broad, extremely hard chest of the Laird of the Isle of Myst, Brec McCloud who made a startling announcement. Later Brec would realize his mistake of goading her by announcing himself as `ole Nick, the devil himself!' Honora then led him on a merry chase before he could convince her to accept his suit of marriage. Ultimately, her choice was between the toady Earl Rothwell or the mysterious darkly handsome Laird - Honora chose the man who set her on fire with one very passionate kiss. - No contest! The closer they got to the Isle of Myst, Honora would see her husband turn from happy and agreeable to brooding and watchful. She arrived and found that her dreams of a joyous welcome were met instead with silence and suspicion. Undaunted, Honora met the occupants of the castle with all the dignity and poise of a duke's daughter as she attempted to uncover the secrets that kept the man she'd fallen in love with from speaking words of love. Madl delivers a fully robust tale with an appealing cast of characters. Honora and Brec were a lovely couple that you'll be rooting for to overcome their hesitancy in failing to recognize or admit to their love. The secondary characters were wonderfully supporting and the many trials and tribulations they faced made this a page-turner. Well researched and well-paced, fans of Scottish romances should heartily enjoy this latest offering.
