Spread Spectrum CDMA offers a comprehensive overview of 2G and 3G cellular implementations of Code Division Multiple Access (IS-95 and IS-2000). Beginning with a basic description of the typical wireless link (e.g. RF propagation, link budget analysis, digital modulation), the text then progresses the reader through an understanding of how CDMA works (e.g. the use of Pseudo-Random Noise codes and orthogonal Walsh Codes, Direct Sequence Spreading gain, recovering energy previously lost via multipath reflections), and the significant advantages CDMA offers in a multi-user environment over existing 2G/3G wireless technologies. To provide something of a "real world" application of CDMA in action, the text also offers a basic "day-in-the-life" overview of a generic CDMA cell phone operating on a typical wireless network. This book is highly recommended for technicians and engineers with a basic background in wireless technologies, and who are looking to expand that knowledge to understand how Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum CDMA works, and the advantages it offers in improving the capacity of a wireless system in a multi-user environment.
I have been using this book to study the standards of IS-95 and spread spectrum communications (cell phones). The absolute BEST part of this book is the review questions at the end of each chapter. Each chapter has 20 or more questions meant to challenge you like "what two criteria are required for a modulation process to be considered spread spectrum" Here is what makes this book worth the money. The answers follow right after. In fact if I had to complain about anything it would be that the answers are too wordy sometimes lol. I am using this book as a study guide for wireless job interviews. There is no way anyone can ask me a question I didn't first see here. Including the questions in the appendix there is a total of 214 questions WITH ANSWERS.
Gread Foundation for CDMA

This book provides an excellent foundation for CDMA technology. The text is divided into 3 sections. The 1st deals with basic communication theory and is a good reference, or foundation of communications and CDMA. The 2nd part is the IS95 standard, and the 3rd is CDMA2k. It must be a relatively new book, because there are lots of errors, but they're mainly all typo's. In general, the author was very concise, and allowed me to come up to speed from virtually no background and now understand things like fading, multipath, along with the higher level view of CDMA and how it differs from frequency modulation, phase modulation etc... The spec's are all pin plain english as well - so all in all the book is easy to read.
Excellent introduction to CDMA
