St. Rosaline of Villeneuve was born in 1267 in Provence, France. She was consecrated a Carthusian nun at the age of 21. In about 1300, she succeeded her aunt, Blessed Jeanne (Diane) de Villeneuve, as Prioress of the Carthusian monastery of La Celle-Roubaud. It was the time of the last crusades. The Villeneuves were a devout family who fought for the protection of Christian souls, some with sword and armor and some, like St. Rosaline, with prayer and fasting.Mark Vincent tells children about the earthly life and the spiritual battles of St. Rosaline of Villeneuve, a great but hidden 14th century Carthusian Saint. He addresses his audience directly as their storyteller evoking the spiritual adventure of St. Rosaline's life. The unschooled freshness of Nadia Olson's art framed by rich floral designs reminiscent of Provencal textiles makes this book a feast for the eye. There is a lot of detail to discover and enjoy. Both, the author and the illustrator, are members of a Byzantine Catholic church. You will find the rich imagery of Eastern Christian iconography and liturgy reflected in the text and the art of this book. This book contains a timeline and a map for your school or home school history project.
