Book Overview

A dark family secret ... Stephen is fifteen when the nightmares begin. The dream is always the same: a crying baby, a wooden ladder, a house built in the branches, fire everywhere. Night after night, the fantastic images haunt him. More chilling than the dream itself, though, is the fact that this is the very same nightmare that haunted Stephen's brother, Marcus--the dream that drove Marcus to run away. Now Stephen is the age his brother was when he left, and he wonders what it all means. Determined not to run from the truth, Stephen steels himself for a journey of remarkable discovery that he hopes will eventually lead him to the truth about the past and, ultimately, about himself. 00-01 South Carolina Book Award Nomination Masterlist (Grds 6-9)

Captivating

Stephen Fair is a very interesting book written by Tim Wynne-Jones. I have read several books by him, but this one was the first one I read. The book has an element of mystery to it from the start. 15-year-old Stephen Fair has a recurring dream about a treehouse on fire and a baby crying. He learns that this was the same dream that eventually drove his older brother to run away when he was his age. With his brother gone, Stephen tries to figure out the mystery of what this dream is trying to say and find out family secrets that have been kept from him for years. Overall, this book was captivating. I found a fast page-turner and I could read it in a short amount of time. The book is believable and well-written. There are many "Casablanca" references which I thought fit the story well. The ending of the book was satisfying and definitely said that the book was over. I: 5/5 O: 5/5 WC: 5/5 V: 5/5 SF: 5/5

wonderful

I read this book many times through elementary school and high school. It was absolutely wonderful. It influenced many of my reading choices afterwards... like the maestro another excellent read by tim wynne jones. This is one of my all time favorite adolescent novels

Tim Wynne Jones (the best)

I feel That this book is very well writen. I ahvr read all of his books and feel that this one compleats the list so far. I feel everyone should read this book because it is a very good introductoin to young adult readers.

another wonder by wynne-jones

an enormous fan of tim wynne-jones' "the maestro", i thought stephen fair was a wonderful addition to his line of 'show-not-tell' style books. stephen is a believable 15 yr. old who indulges in fantasy at times, (as well as in spur of the moment whims), but is strong enough to handle the truth when he finally finds it. i thought the author's use of the film 'casablanca' was perfect for this book as it made me want to watch to movie to see what all the fuss was about! (was that the author's intention?) my only negative criticism was that 'stephen fair' was so chock full of characters that i often got them mixed up. i can't say i enjoyed 'stephen fair' as much as i enjoyed 'the maestro' (i completely fell for burl crow and his enigmatic surrogate-dad maestro) but it is most definitely as well-written, worthwhile read for anyone.
