French sea captain Stephen Girard was down on his luck when he sailed into the port of Philadelphia in 1776; at the time of his death in 1831 he was the country's wealthiest citizen, and had played a decisive behind-the-scenes role in the life of the young nation.
I live in the Philadelphia area where many places bear Girard's name, and never knew who Stephen Girard is - I'm betting 99% of people don't. I don't want to spoil the read, but suffice it to say I am amazed he is not a household name like his peers Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, ... Girard was an interesting man! The author does an fine job of conveying the life and character of the man, and I would highly recomend this book to anyone who appreciates bipgraphies.
