As a child in Arkansas in the 1950s, Gray Alsobrook watched his father drive away and abandon his family. So when Gray Alsobrook came home from the Vietnam War as a young man and started his own family with his wife, Doreen, he determined to put down tightly-holding roots in the first town where he got a decent job, even if it was a town with a racially troubled past like Meadowview, Alabama. Almost two decades later, their youngest child, Joe, enters the home-stretch of his senior year of high school.
