The recounting of six friends (three couples) who make a canoe oddesey - paddle, drag, and portage across the Barren Lands of Norther Canada. Raffan's writing is on a par with Thoreau for his ability to connect to nature and to recount the benefit of "being" where you are. This is not a travelogue but a journey - the physical one and the spiritual one. He reviews the dynamic of six friends (and companions) getting along for an extended period of time, facing multiple hardships - all of them expected, but still, each had to be endured and surmounted. The journey was the objective, the destination only had importance as they had to reach there to be able to hitch their ride home. Raffan doesn't bore the reader with tedious details of how they travelled, but focuses on the impact their encounters along the way had on them. Just as the travellers were in no hurry to complete their journey once the end was in sight, I was sad to close the book at the end.
