This guide covers two exams with certification exercises to help the student pass the Solaris certification exam. It includes a CD-ROM for both exams and the electronic version of the book. This description may be from another edition of this product.
I picked up this book to review for the tests because it was one of the few out there for SOLARIS 8 at the time (mid 2001). The book was great. It really helped focus on the objectives that would be on the test and was the only resource necessary other than a SUN workstation to test out some of the exercies. Kicked both test's... with ease. There are a few errors mostly on the CertTrainer software. If you know the answers, it is easy enough to work through them. Global Knowledge should have a proper update/patch for this software on their web site but they don't. If they did, there would be no problems at all with this book. If you gotta study for the test, this is the book to get. Once you get to where you nail all the sample tests, you will nail the real tests.
Excellent book.

This is an excellent book that you should take your time reading. As one little line that seems insignificant becomes a full blown question on the Solaris exam. I passed both SCSA part 1,2 with 78% on each exam using only this book and a Ultra 5 system off of ebay. To bad all the Solaris jobs are starting to dry up now.Only thing that I can rememeber on the exam that wasn't covered was jar compression syntax. Plus some wierd question like:"Which of these are synonymous with the word Server?"
Good Book

Tons of hands on exercises and labs help bring the printed material to life- If you're looking for a study respurce for these exams, pick this book up. You'll be glad you did...
Good text for a Solaris Sys Admin course
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 23 years ago
I have been looking for a textbook that I can use to teach a course in Solaris system administration and I have finally found it. I like this book because: 1. It is readable. Let's face it, UNIX texts are not fascinating reading, but this one holds my interest better than others I have reviewed including Sun's books that come with their exam preparatory courses. 2. It is comprehensive. It does not just concentrate on being an exam cram for the certification exams. The information presented explains why things work the way they do. 3. It has great support. The CD that comes with this book contains a summary of each chapter and a practice exam which provides feedback after each question that lets you know why each possible choice was either correct or incorrect. I have not taken the full practice exams that come on the CD, but I retaken the practice exams on the dullest chapters after multiple hour intervals and aced them thanks to the feedback system. If you want to skate through the exams there are other sources that can help you do this, but if you want to learn UNIX system administration and study for the exam, this is an excellent book.
