Born as Sunisa Phabsomphou, she became Sunisa Lee on March 9, 2003, in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Her mother, Yeev Thoj, is engaged in the healthcare sector and came to the US from Laos when she was a little child. Born within the Hmong community, Lee was brought up by her mother's friend, John Lee, starting at the age of two. In her teenage years, she adopted his last name and came to think of him as her father. She has two step-siblings from John's past relationship and three half-siblings from her mother's relationship with John Lee. Her sister Evionn also competed in artistic gymnastics at the regional level.
