175 years before the events of "Nightfall" the world ended in fire and plague. The Scourge rose as mankind fell and by the time the dust settled there was no one left to witness it. "Survival: Eastern North America 1" contains the stories of different people from different times and locations from the World of Nightfall.

Armageddon had come and gone, and out of that fiery, biohazardous brimstone rose new nations and new empires. In the Heart of Dixie, a great power is rising, one to rival the memory of the pre-impact United States in its eminence. The New Southern States of America brings rule of law and hope to those who accept it, or bullets and bombs to those who don't. To the north, in the ruins of Tennessee, the Merchant Republic of Mare are rebuilding civilization along the newly formed Central Sea. While in the irradiated ruins of the Rust Belt, the feudal Fuhren Clans fight amongst themselves for hegemony over the region; all the while, an empire of bones and blood is rising, hellbent on burning them both to the ground in the name of their gods. In the Gulf of Mexico, weathered sailors say that a vestige of the old world survived the fall of civilization and is building an empire to challenge even the Scourge, but only a fool would believe that.
