An honest portrayal of living with Parkinson's disease

"Surviving Adversity" is a heavy title, but actually it is the account of 28 people who have indeed survived the adversity of having Parkinson's disease. People like you and me and Janet Reno. What struck me profoundly was a simple truth known by all Parkinson's disease (PD) patients but too easily forgotten; that diet and exercise are supremely important to delaying the progression of the disease and to maintaining a sense of well-being. Each person's account of 'my disease' was different; each had a different constellation of symptoms, but there were enough similarities to connect us as a community of Persons With Parkinson's (PWP's). I have given several copies of the book to friends and PWP's in my PD community because the collection of biographical sketches left me with a great sense of hope and a genuine sense of honor at belonging to a group of individuals who are so courageous and strong. The adversity each is surviving is real and, if we allow it, devastating.
