This book is admittedly biased in support of liberty. Taiwan: The Threatened Democracy focuses on U.S. relations with Taiwan and the People's Republic of China from the Mao Tse-tung era through the Cold War to the current day, and projects the island's possible future. Taiwan has long been a flashpoint in the struggle between the communist and free world. Yet even as the possibility of armed conflict between China and Taiwan increases - a conflict with great implications for the United States - a domestic war has sprung up between the Bush White House and its support of Taiwan, and State Department staffers who lean heavily to the side of the People's Republic of China. Key to the conflict are those who care more about making profit in China than they care about maintaining liberty in Taiwan.
The author of the book is a well-known political commentator, who has the first-hand information with regard to what went through between recent US presdients and Taiwan. His comments on State Department's handling of China is out-and-out candor and his observation of the threat of democracy by Chinese PRC and its coms[irator, ROC in Taiwan, is absolutely profound.
Good thorough recap of the history of Taiwan

For anyone who is even mildly interested in politics and government, Herschensohn's book is an enlightening read into the sordid affairs of the soon to be dominant communist China. Herschensohn speaks for the people of Taiwan by proving that unless people around the world who embrace democracy share an outpouring of support for misunderstood and underrepresented Taiwan, China will and can unstabilize the world in much the same way the middle east currently does. A must read for any Taiwanese American.

Any book recommended by Hugh Hewitt, Dennis Prager and Rush Limbaugh is a "Must-read." When that book is written by Bruce Herschensohn, it's a "Must-read NOW!" Did you know that the PRC has NEVER governed Taiwan? That Presidents from Ford on have consistently mis-represented the Shanghai Communique? All this - and much, much more - is revealed in this clear, concise, enjoyable book. Buy it and read it now - while Taiwan is still free. Later may be too late.
This is a scary but vital book.

Bruce Herschensohn teaches at Pepperdine University among other things, and is someone who was high up in the Nixon and Reagan administrations. He clearly knows of what he speaks. China isn't just an emerging threat to the West, it's a threat, period, as the recent satellite-killing missile test shows. Herschensohn makes clear that China's desire to either possess or destroy Taiwan has huge implications for the United States. This is an "echo of the Cold War" that could come back to haunt us in a big way.
