This comprehensive text presents reading and writing instruction from a middle school and secondary school perspective. It focuses on reading and writing as processes for constructing meaning through interactions and transactions between the learner, the text, and the social environment. Instructional strategies and approaches are developed to guide students' content learning and literacy development. It also gives teachers sound, theory-based instructional strategies for increasing their teaching effectiveness and developing student's literacy/learning abilities.
This is one of my most favorite books for teaching literacy across the curriculum. Ruddell has great strategies and lesson plans for writing across the curriculum.
Better than the rest

I generally loathe ed books and have found most to be pretty useless to the actual teacher in a real classroom. Not so Ms. Rapp Ruddell's book! In Mary Ellen Vogt's class at Cal State Long Beach, we had the benefit of reading this book in Galley form. IT IS SO WORTH IT.I don't know about the second and third edition, but this first one is GOLD! BUY IT!
