Inside an elegant case with a ribbon enclosure, "Tennis" contains two volumes that offer leisure and enjoyment between matches. "Nostalgia" traces the story of hard court and lawn tennis from medieval times to today. "Playing the Game" provides a valuable survey of the equipment, rules, and etiquette of tennis. 70+ color photos.
Author Christopher Dunkley provides an excellent synopsis of the history of tennis, and he provides an instruction manual that is appropriate for all levels of play. While reading the "Nostalgia" volume, I often laughed aloud as a result of Dunkley's keen sense of humor! I was unable to put the book down until I read the whole thing, which exemplifies how engaging this book is. (Mary Ewing Outerbridge was not mentioned, and I believe that she may have brought Major Clopton Wingfield's game to America?) I picked the book up, by chance, while browsing at Border's... I recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in tennis; Mr. Dunkley's love of the game that shines through, in conjunction with his historical contextualization of its development, make this book a great tennis resource.
