Partners in Policymaking is a program that began in 1987. Colleen Wieck, the Executive Director of the Minnesota Governor's Council on Developmental Disabilities of the Department of Administration, came up with the idea for a leadership training program meant to create advocates and self-advocates from parents of children with developmental disabilities and adult with disabilities. The program's participants are educated on best practices to create positive relationships with policymakers and to become policymakers themselves.Texas Partners in Policymaking attempts to ensure that partners come from a diverse background, working to have a balanced mix of advocates and self-advocates of different ages, races, genders, diagnoses, and experiences in advocacy. Alumni from past Texas classes have won victories on various levels, from community playgrounds to schools to city councils to the state capitol. The current class looks forward to adding their own accomplishments to the already impressive list of achievements.
