Learning sign language is a rewarding experience that leads to greater communication skills. This basic introduction guide is for people without any prior knowledge of sign. The approach to "Signed English" is based upon the way a child would first be taught a language. In 17 sections, The Art of Sign Language teaches by using themed exercises about topics such as everyday communication, the body, home, school, leisure, eating, and drinking.
Brought this for my child to expand her ASL vocabulary. It's very informative, delivered quickly, and is in great condition.

Our daughter learned some ASL at her preschool and we wanted to know more about it, so this book seemed to be the right one. It is good for learning some basics, but if you really want to learn more about ASL, you need another book. The signs in this book are clear and with all the pictures easy to learn. We liked it, it is a good beginners book.

Although I am by no means an expert when it comes to Sign Language, I believe this book is decent. It may have a few mistakes, like any book is bound to have, but overall it is a fine aid. The signs are easy to understand, and for the most part very accurate. I am not sure why readers are complaining that their deaf loved ones do not understand the signs in the book; mine have understood perfectly. Maybe the previous reviewers are incorrectly interpreting the signs; whatever the case, The Art of Sign Language is a fine book for beginners. I recommend it, as it gave me my start in the language, and I am well on my way to becoming fluent.
