Richard Dunstan, the author, first visited the late Father Rick Thomas and the OLYC community in El Paso and Ciudad Juarez in 1989; while there, he had a life-changing encounter with Jesus during a visit to prisoners in the cells at the Juarez municipal jail. He has returned to the community frequently since then. This book grew out of a suggestion from Father Thomas, and is based on extensive interviews with him and other OLYC volunteers, as well as personal experience of the ministries.

What really matters

This book is about wanting possessions and what really do I need. When you can't go and visit the poor if you live far from them, then read this book....it helped me be reminded of how blessed we as American are and how we always need to reach out to the poor and less fortunate. They were created in the image and likeness of God just like us. I recommend reading this book!

Richard Dunstan does a wonderful job describing the various ministries of Our Lady's Youth Center and the Lord's Ranch and how it all got started. There is also a moving description of the funeral of Fr. Richard Thomas, S.J. where 2 bishops and 17 priests presided and a thousand people filled the church. Read it and be inspired!
