This book is an excellent read. The author does an excellent job combining the awful side of slavery, (whippings, torture, and death)with human emotion between both the slaves and the slave owners. For those who are sensitive to discussions of slavery and the derogatory words that are used to describe African-Americans during slavery, I do not recommend reading this book. The author places you in the realm of the slavery days and it is sometimes a bit much to take. The author also explores how the slaves sometimes practiced witchcraft/ritualistic practices, which at times can be a little unnerving. I enjoyed how the author explored both sides of the relationship between the slaves and the slave owners. I do highly recommned this book for those who are interested in learning a little more about the breeding practices during the slave era and the contrasting relationships between slaves and their slave owners.
