This book is an exhaustive look at the work of Frederick Buechner, arguably one of the giants of current American letters. Buechner is a multi-faceted writer -- toiling in fiction, theology, and memoir. This book is focused on the fiction, and is built on the premise that the fiction is the key to unlocking all of Buechner's work. Author Dale Brown knows his subject; and not just as a critical reader. He actually "knows" his subject -- many of the footnotes in the book refer to "personal correspondence." The personal relationship, as well as numerous scholarly insights, provide the material for a fascinating trip through the work of a great writer.

Great book -- well-written. I wish there had been more non-fiction discussion.

Dale Brown has done us all a great service by delving deep into the heart and soul of one of our most beloved authors and examining his impressive body of work from a unified perspective. This book is a college course in literature. Very enlightening and a much-needed addition to the works of Buechner himself. Why Buechner isn't mentioned in the same breath as Updike, Garcia-Marquez and Trollope is a tragedy. Maybe this book will help awaken a deeper understanding. I can't recommend it highly enough.
