Book Overview

An enthralling novel about love, loss, secrets, friendship, and the healing power of literature, by the bestselling author of The Knitting Circle . Ava's twenty-five-year marriage has fallen apart, and her two grown children are pursuing their own lives outside of the country. Ava joins a book group, not only for her love of reading but also out of sheer desperation for companionship. The group's goal throughout the year is for each member to present the book that matters most to them. Ava rediscovers a mysterious book from her childhood--one that helped her through the traumas of the untimely deaths of her sister and mother. Alternating with Ava's story is that of her troubled daughter Maggie, who, living in Paris, descends into a destructive relationship with an older man. Ava's mission to find that book and its enigmatic author takes her on a quest that unravels the secrets of her past and offers her and Maggie the chance to remake their lives.

Meh...I'm borderline

This book had so much potential that I feel was just ignored. I felt as though there wasn't a solid story line. Too much crammed into a couple of characters, with a large amount of supporting characters. The story line of the main characters mother, could have been detailed and started earlier in the book. That would have been a great addition. Instead, it was as if it was a last minute thought thrown into the end of the book. And it was hardly plausible and didn't make sense as a way to wrap up the story. It left me feeling irritated that that was the end when there could have been so much more to detail. As I was reading, it constantly felt like the author was toying with separate ways to change the story line, but then didn't, and just moved on oddly from what I thought was going to be a twist, or event or detail. Lots of "supporting" (if you can even call them that for their very brief stints) characters that could have been left out altogether. I took about 4 days off from reading it, which lagged my time to finish it. But I just never felt anything that made me want to know more, or stay connected. Also, I rated this a 2 on Goodreads, but all of these forums have different ways of rating.
