The book of Philippians is often referred to as the epistle of joy. According to Dr. Gromacki, Paul teaches that this joy comes from an understanding of who Christ is and what He has done for each believer, an emphasis on the gospel, and a proper motivation for our actions. Dr. Gromacki discusses the motivation of Paul: "For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain" (1:21). Just as people think "golf" when the names Arnold Palmer or Tiger Woods are mentioned, so believers thought 'Christ' when the name of Paul was mentioned. Paul wanted Christ to be magnified in his body, whether through living or dying for Him. The challenge to the reader is: What do people think of when they hear your name?
Book Review: "The Books of Philippians and Colossians" by Robert Gromacki
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 15 years ago
Gromacki's book on Philippians and Colossians is a very well written commentary dedicated to accurate translation, word studies, and a solid interpretation. He provides a comprehensive and thought provoking look at both books of the Bible. Essentially, he divides the book itself into two broad sections covering Philippians and Colossians respectively. From there, he breaks down segments of Scripture into chapters drawing out the interpretation, meanings of key words and phrases, and adequately applies it to the contemporary believer's life. Both sections are similar in length, being 111 pages and 100 pages respectively. He includes study questions at the end of each chapter allowing for further reflection and application both for the reader and the potential audience of the reader. Dr. Gromacki is careful to allow the text to interpret itself, not the other way around. His in depth knowledge of the Word of God shines through. For those who are looking for a literal interpretation of God's Word, a conservative and dispensational view, this commentary is the right one. For the pastor or layman who is a Sunday School teacher, this is a great resource for planning and preparing a sermon or lesson. This book provides careful instruction with practical application; it has everything a good commentary needs.
