British point of view and chronology of the music to 1987

If you are searching for a complete biography of Paul Simon, look elsewhere. This book by Patrick Humphries is similar to his other works on Dylan and Springsteen, a chronology of the music by the entertainer. And, the book is dated as it doesn't go past 1987, the controversial South African collaboration, Graceland. Since the book is written by a British, much of the book delves on the "British" side of Simon's musical achievements and activities. We hear a lot about what, who and when and why from Britain. Although well-written, it doesn't appear as if the author ever interviewed Simon, as his mass amount of quotes (with acknowledgments) are from numerous sources. Interestingly, many of Simon's musical lyrics are explained. From Duo to Film Humphries begins in 1957 during the "Tom and Jerry" era that Simon and Garfunkel emerged on the scene. Not a lot into the "break-up" of the duo, but author does go into Paul Simon, the solo artist. Plenty is written about the film score from "The Graduate" with the highly successful "Mrs. Robinson". We also learn about his film "One Trick Pony". Central Park Concert You will learn few things about the plan to reunite in 1981's popular Central Park concert. Simon and Garfunkel had their differences, Garfunkel wanted just a guitar and Simon, with an injury to his hand couldn't handle a guitar through a concert. So he insisted on a full back-up band. The author writes about the success, and the history behind the "Johnny Ace" song; this was the song where a fanatic leaped at Simon and was quickly hauled away. How Dare You I can't believe that Humphries said that during the Central Park concert the most embarrassing song for them to do "Wake Up Little Susie" because.....get this..... two forty-year olds singing about coming home late from a date! Get real....It's a classic song for Christ sake. Graceland! One of Simon's best includes the inspiration, the music, tour and the controversary. .....Rizzo
