Book Overview

This richly illustrated book contains over 200 photographs, nearly half of which are in full colour. It constitutes the best collection of available photographs of the planets that have been obtained from space over the past two decades. Also included, wherever available, are global maps of the planets and their satellites. Each of the following chapters is devoted to one of the planets, summarizing what has been learned about that planet and explaining in non-technical terms the features that can be seen in the many breathtaking photographs that are presented. The chapters are set out with the text first, followed by the figures, each accompanied by a long caption describing its essential points.

The Best Book on the Planets

This is most definitely the best book on the Planets that I have ever seen, and I have been collecting books on the Planets since 1966. The pictures are fantastic, and there are many updated information. There is much about the moons as well, however even more of Saturn's moons have been found since this publication. A must for any astronomy lover.

For anyone wanting to learn more about celestial objects

The Cambridge Photographic Guide To The Planets by Fred Taylor (Halley Professor of Physics, University of Oxford, and Distinguished Visiting Scientist, Earth and Space Sciences Division, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology) is a truly gorgeous book filled from cover to cover with full color astronomical photographs taken of planets, moons, and other heavenly bodies in our solar system. The descriptive text is scholarly, yet completely accessible to non-specialist general readers of a wide variety of educational backgrounds. The Cambridge Photographic Guide To The Planets is a splendid volume for anyone wanting to learn more about the celestial objects that are neighbor to Mother Earth, and would make a prized and appreciated addition to any personal, professional, academic, or community library astronomy collection.
