Chris Bowman is all about science and his only belief in ghosts is that they are merely "fairy tales". When he accompanies his parents on a summer archeological dig near the legendary Gretchen's Lock at Beaver Creek State Park, Chris has a strange chance encounter with a red-haired girl claiming to be THE GRETCHEN. This meeting tests his resolve and shakes his scientific beliefs to the core.
Through his mother's encouragement to keep a daily journal, "not a diary," these notebook entries show his personal thoughts and growth as Chris comes of age during the summer preceding, and the autumn of, his high school freshman year.
Readers of Gretchen will be gratified to find that this companion composition to Gretchen fills in some of the omissions from the original book. Chris, who never expects his journal to be read by anyone, writes many entries that are often humorous to the outsider while giving an in-depth perspective of the everyday life of a high school freshman.
