Christmas is coming, and there's a lot to be done - from baking cookies to sending out cards to decorating the tree. Ma, Pa, and their seven cubs take their preparations most seriously, for on Christmas Eve, Pa has a very important job to do. He loads the toys from his workshop into a sleigh and takes off to deliver them all over the world! And delightful endpapers show where the family's friends, such as the spectacled bear, snowy owl, and reindeer, live throughout the world. With a simple, joyful rhyming text and her signature warm, detailed illustrations, Chris Conover celebrates the happy anticipation of Christmas that makes the season so wonderful.
This book earns most of its stars because of the adorable illustrations! And for Conover's use of various types of bears (polar, panda, grizzly, etc.). The story was cute enough, though I was a tad confused (upon reflection I'm wondering if this Mr. Bear was the Bears' Santa Claus? Hm... I should reread it with that in mind). Overall it was an enjoyable read, and even if it was nothing super memorable, it had a nice message of sharing and the spirit of Christmas.
Whether Bear or Human, Christmas is a Special Time

Christmas is coming! This family of bears is in preparation for the big day. They have cookies to make, wreaths to hang, and presents to give. Every couple pages, there is a two-line rhyming pattern, followed by beautifully drawn pictures. It shows how a family can work together through an often stressful time of the year. All the cubs are different, showing just how blended families really can be. It reminds us that what is really important about Christmas is being with your family. Chris Conover manages to portray this message all while saying very few words. The front and back covers show a map of where all the different bears of the world live so it has a little educational material thrown in. The pictures are adorable and colorful making this book a great read with your family this holiday season. Reviewed by Jennifer LeBrun

The Christmas Bears is a children's picturebook following a family of anthropomorphic bears who are hard at work preparing for Christmas. Pa bear has perhaps the most important job of all - one that has him dress up in a red-and-white suit, and that requires the help of flying reindeer! Playful, rhyming text and colorful illustrations that almost make one want to reach out and feel how fuzzy they are distinguish this excellent picturebook, perfect for the family to share while getting into the holiday spirit.
