★ "Snicket and Klassen present a picture book that tackles a basic childhood worry with suspense, a dash of humor, and a satisfying resolution."―School Library Journal, starred review Bestselling author Lemony Snicket teams up with Caldecott Medalist Jon Klassen to create an irresistible picture book about conquering fear of the dark. Laszlo is afraid of the dark. The dark lives in the same house as Laszlo. Mostly, though, the dark stays in the basement and doesn't come into Lazslo's room. But one night, it does. This is the story of how Laszlo stops being afraid of the dark. With emotional insight and poetic economy, two award-winning talents team up to overcome a universal childhood fear. ★ "Readers are going to want to read this one over and over."―Library Media Connection, starred review A School Library Journal Best Book of the Year - A Publishers Weekly Best Book of the Year - ALSC Notable Books for Children
This book actually scared me, an adult, as I read it to my two-year-old. My daughter was scared and hiding her eyes too. It comes around nicely at the end being something I would truly consider a piece of art. It's too complex to be a book obsession for my two-year-old, but I look forward to pulling it back out when she's older.
Wasn’t what I expected...

I love Lemony Snicket, and Jon Klassen. Seeing that these two collaborated together made me choose this book without a second thought. I bought this book to read to my three year old hoping it would help him not be afraid of the dark. I haven’t read it to him yet because it actually came off creepy to me. The story and illustrations go together really well... buuuut it’s definitely not a happy-go-lucky kind of vibe. I assumed it would have some humor or lightness to it, but it doesn’t. Who knows, maybe my son will love it. We’ll just have to wait and see.
