Book Overview

Bestselling psychologist Dr. Meg Jay uses real stories from real lives to provide smart, compassionate, and constructive advice about the crucial (and difficult) years we cannot afford to miss.

Our "thirty-is-the-new-twenty" culture tells us the twentysomething years don't matter. Some say they are a second adolescence. Others call them an emerging adulthood. Dr. Meg Jay, a clinical psychologist, argues that twentysomethings have been caught in a swirl of hype and misinformation, much of which has trivialized what is actually the most defining decade of adulthood.

Drawing from almost two decades of work with hundreds of clients and students, The Defining Decade weaves the latest science of the twentysomething years with the behind-closed-doors stories from twentysomethings, themselves. The result is a provocative read that provides the tools necessary to make the most of your twenties, and shows us how work, relationships, personality, social networks, identity, and even the brain can change more during this decade than at any other time in adulthood--if we use the time wisely.

The Defining Decade is a smart, compassionate and constructive book about the years we cannot afford to miss.

Absolutely fabulous for anyone in their 20s -- I recommend it all the time

Meg Jay has written a useful, encouraging, truthful and inspiring book for the 20-something crowd. As a coach, I have recommended this book many times. It is accessible and easy to read and comprehend and truly motivating and educational. And fun to read! Wonderful advice and no judgement or "shoulds". Any 20-something will come away feeling like someone finally understands them and has useful advice and counsel for how to get the most out of the "decade of exploration".

I am 20 - I don't hate it but...

I don't think self help books are for me. Please take my opinion with a grain of salt. I appreciate the positivity of the book. The author does not list out ways to avoid feeling like a failure, she used a lot of real world examples that didn't quite fit with my world, even if I tried to make it fit. It got boring and it felt like a chore to read... this happens to me with every self help book, so I have decided to avoid them until I have patience to read through something that isn't a thrilling story with characters and drama. If you have patience and are lost in life, this might work for you, me though? I'll wing it. I didn't finish it btw. Try, 'You Are a Badass' forgot the author but the cover is yellow. It is a quick read and gives tips on how to stay down to earth. But honestly, these books are just too long and get boring fast. Like, just give me the formula to life and let's move on ughh!

If its not a terrible idea, read this book.

Do not waste your life: you'll understand if you read this book, I could go into details as to why you should but ultimately it doesn't matter. You're either going to read or not. I'm wishful that you'll read the words this author to the time to place on the paper.

Great read

I’m 21 and definitely some great advice on how to plan for my future and what I should start doing ASAP. I love how the author uses real life examples of real people with real experiences. Definitely a excellent read for early 20’s.

Full of great advice

At 28 I thought I was too old to read this book, since I’ve almost aged out of the target audience. However this book has lit a fire under my proverbial butt to get up and make these next 2 years (and all the years that follow) count. This books makes you feel like you’re lying on a couch in front of Dr Jay and she’s giving you all the advice that you need to hear.
