This book provides a highly readable outline of China's history within a framework of external events that have impacted on China. It provides a good starting point for anyone who is seeking to understand influences on China and the way in which it chooses to interact with the world. I don't believe that it is possible to try to understand China without developing some understanding of the cultural and philosophical influences that have shaped this country over the past three thousand years. Professor Gelber covers many such influences and, in addition, provides references for those who seek more detail. In addition to providing context from the past, Professor Gelber discusses some of the future challenges for China. This includes some analysis of the challenges of governing a country with such an enormous population.
