John Hobson challenges the ethnocentric bias of mainstream accounts of the Rise of the West that assume that Europeans have pioneered their own development, and that the East has been a passive by-stander. Describing the rise of what he calls the Oriental West, Hobson argues that Europe first assimilated many Eastern inventions, and then appropriated Eastern resources through imperialism. Hobson's book thus propels the hitherto marginalized Eastern peoples to the forefront of the story of progressive world history.
It is wonderful for Prof Hobson to write this well research book on the eastern origins of western civilisation. The four great inventions of China brought about the Industrial revolution for the modern world. Zheng He, Admiral fleet of Ming Dynasty on the front cover dwarfs the Christopher Columbus boat to America in 1492. Of course China offers more technological advances for a better peaceful world. China was humiliated in the British Opium wars and suffered thirty seven unequal treaties. China entered twentieth century in the eight countries occupying the capital Peking in Boxer Movement for westerners invaded culturally, religiously and militarily. Mao declared China stood up, Deng made China become wealthy and Xi makes it strong. After reform and opening, China catches up the lost years and restores the glories. It frightens the arrogant west hegemony with all mud throwing in trade war, and genocides. China is devil resurrected to be beaten. Learning the peace and harmony civilization of China is the beginning of WISDOM! Amen
