In an age when political pressures and the cry for accountability threaten to reduce English teaching to a set of skills, Susan and Stephen Tchudi present a better alternative. They call for a thorough grounding in the theory of language and language learning, and creative application of that theory in the classroom. The English Language Arts Handbook offers both. With this second edition, the Tchudis continue to combine theory and practice, demonstrating new ways to challenge and broaden students' language and thinking. Each chapter begins with a concise overview of a specific theory regarding literacy education, which is then followed by activities that put that theory into practice. All of the material has been completely updated, featuring new information on: use of the Internet for research, collaboration, and student exchange multicultural opportunities for teaching and learning gender equity in classrooms professional development community building for classrooms and teachers creative classroom practices that integrate reading, writing, speaking, listening, and artistic activity. The Tchudis wrote The English Language Arts Handbook because they believe that the English classroom-in fact all classrooms-should be places for joyful exploration of the word and world. Both preservice and inservice teachers will find the book an inspiring and highly useful resource.
This book is a necessity for teachers who want great ideas on how to get their students interested. There are strategies for getting resistant students into the mainstrean and functioning. It gives the teacher a guide with steps to do a successful job.It is easy to read and apply to the classroom. It also gives good ideas about dealing with the multi-cultural classroom that most teachers deal with today. I was assigned the book in a college class and would not part with it.

I use this excellent little handbook in my methods class at the local university. Inside are hundreds of well-conceived ideas for the English teacher, young or seasoned. As important, though, are sections on professional conduct, which associations are worth joining, and how to approach speech-making, debates, testing, and other issues related to being a career educator. It's a wonderful source book for any teacher who wishes to improve her practice.
Great for teachers of language arts at all grade levels.

I discovered this book when I was in college. I used it in an English methods course for future high school teachers. It has been an excellent resource for me. I let someone borrow it and never got it back; therefore, I am ordering another copy since it is a necessity in my classroomThis can be used for classroom use by the teacher or as a teaching tool for those teaching students to be teachers.I have taught high school and now junior high-this a must for teachers of language arts/English!!!!
